2024 CHAPTER BOARD MEMBERS

PRESIDENT

Brenda Van Sambeek, RN, MSN, OCN-  bvsrn@yahoo.com

Brenda is the Clinical Nurse Educator for the Thedacare Regional Cancer Center, Radiation, and outpatient treatment areas. She has been an RN for 25 years and has worked in oncology for 28 years. She obtained her Oncology Certified Nursing certification in 2002. She has experience as a clinical lead in oncology for infusion and clinic, and worked as an infusion and telephone triage nurse. She graduated in 2023 with her Masters in Nursing Education from Western Governor University.



      Duties:
  • Serves to appoint committee chairs, coordinates development of chapter goals, objectives and the budget.
  • Schedule, formulate the agenda, and preside at a minimum of four meetings of the board of directors each year.
  • Mentor and prepare the president-elect or vice president (if applicable).
  • Coordinates the completion, review and submission of the annual ONS report and maintains chapter records.
  • A liaison between NEWONS membership and national ONS.
  • Represents NEWONS at national ONS meetings.

VICE PRESIDENT

Melissa Johnson, RN, OCN- melissa.johnson@thedacare.org


     Duties:
  • Assume the role of president in the following situations:
    ɑ Absence of the president
    ɑ Inability of the president to act
    ɑ Resignation of the president
    ɑ Expiration of the president’s term
  • Consults with president to provide continuity and smooth transition of chapter leadership
  • Actively observe and learn the role of the president.


TREASURER

Sharon Dix, RN, OCN, BSN- sharon.dix@thedacare.org

Sharon has been a nurse for 7 years after leaving a career as a Programmer Analyst & Project Manager for a property casualty insurance company when her husband was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma.  After 2 years as a medical surgical nurse, she followed her heart to oncology nursing. She graduated from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, WI (ADN) and Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, WI (BSN).  She currently works both clinic and inpatient nursing. 

   Duties:

  • Supervise the financial transactions of the chapter and maintain all financial records associated with the 
    office of treasurer in compliance with the policies and procedures established by the chapter board of directors and ONS
  • Provide honoraria for speakers
  • Provide scholarships for education and certification and charitable support to our community
  • Donate to ONS Foundation
  • Keep accurate and transparent records of all financial transactions
  • Develop an annual budget, based on a review of the previous year’s budget and current goals and objectives as approved
    by the board of directors
  • Prepare the treasurer’s report for the chapter president to sign and submit to ONS National by January 31 each year
  • Prepare the treasurer’s report for presentation at each meeting of the chapter board of directors and the general chapter
    membership business meeting.



MEMBER RELATIONS


Nancy Gudex, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP- ngudex3@gmail.com
Nancy has been a nurse for over 30 years working in a variety of areas throughout her career including inpatient oncology, home health, long term care, and a hematology/oncology clinic.  She graduated from the University of WI-Oshkosh with her Adult Nurse Practitioner degree in 2003 and is certified as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner. For the past 7 years she has been a Senior Medical Science Liaison at Bristol Meyers Squibb.  She was one of the founding members of NEWONS and has previously held the position of Program Chair.


      Duties:

  • This committee promotes membership development in ONS National and the chapter and Members in strategies to recruit and retain membership in ONS
  • Submit a report on the current membership status and activities of the membership committee at all meetings of the chapter board of directors and general chapter membership 
  • Ensure that the membership committee records are maintained according to procedures established by ONS National
  • Maintains chapter website and Facebook
  • Coordinates and delegates duties related to social media
  • Student relations and leadership development



PROGRAM COORDINATOR


Autumn Kilker, RN, BSN-

Autumn is an experienced Registered Nurse and Medical Business Professional with over 30 years of experience. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and currently works as a Senior Hematology Consultant for Bristol Myers Squibb. Autumn brings a passion for education as well as program management experience. She is thrilled to be serving on the NEWONS board as Programs Chair and hopes that her unique skillset will benefit the ONS community with its goal of advancement of oncology nursing practice.  Autumn resides in Appleton, WI with her husband, two children, and French Bulldog. She enjoys boating, snow skiing, gardening, and cooking.

Duties:

  • Coordinates and delegates duties related to vendor relations and chapter programs

Secretary

Kari Minten, RN, OCN- kari.minten@bellin.org

Kari has been an RN for 12 1/2 years, 10 1/2 of those have been working in oncology.  She has experience working in medical oncology and outpatient infusion. Currently she wears many hats in her role as an IV infusion nurse, oral agent nurse, charge nurse, and outpatient infusion nurse.

Duties:

  • Keeping accurate records of Society and Board members via agenda and minutes
  • Emailing completed minutes to board members after board meetings



ADVOCACY

Michelle Vanden Boogart, RN, BSN, MSN, OCN- michelle.vbluv@gmail.com

Michelle has been a nurse for over 30 years, with experience in inpatient, outpatient, research, radiation oncology, and leadership.  She brings a broad perspective and a passion for continuously improving the care of oncology patients. She currently serves as Director of Oncology Operations at Ascension Northeast Wisconsin. She looks forward to increasing awareness within our local chapter on the influence nurses have within policy and legislation and taking nursing advocacy to the next level!

Duties:

  • Stay connected with legislative activity at the state and national level
  • Keep the NEWONS chapter informed of advocacy activities
  • Provide easy methods for oncology nurses to influence legislation for desired outcomes.
