Are you interested in advancing the foundation of clinical nursing practice, using your skills as a writer, editor, and mentor to clinical colleagues? If so, consider joining the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON) Editorial Board as an associate editor (AE).

Serving on the CJON Editorial Board will contribute to many of your professional and personal goals. You will:

  • Have advanced knowledge of new and impactful clinical oncology nursing care and evidence
  • Build your editing and publishing competencies, solidifying an additional area of expertise.
  • Experience collegiality—at its best—as a member of a national ONS team valuing and contributing to excellence in clinical oncology nursing practice.

As background, CJON is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal published by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Its mission is to publish clinically relevant, evidence-based content for oncology nurses in diverse roles and practice settings to support the clinical care of those affected by cancer.

The CJON Editorial Board includes the CJON editor and AEs, who coordinate each of the nine CJON departments. The CJON Editorial Board is a collaborative, supportive forum encouraging frequent communication and a robust exchange of ideas to advance content supporting clinical oncology nurses’ practice and excellence in clinical oncology care.

Each CJON AE recruits clinical nurse authors to write their assigned department articles for each CJON issue. Department articles are about 1,700–2,000 words (with the exception of Clinical Moment, which is 600–700 words) and present a focused topic of interest to clinical oncology nurse readers. CJON AEs provide mentorship to the authors as they draft articles and finalize the content for submission. Finalized department draft articles are submitted four months before publication in CJON. 

All CJON AEs must be active ONS members with active nursing licenses. These volunteer positions are appointed by and report to the CJON editor. AEs serve a three-year term based on performance, with an optional fourth transition year to orient the incoming AE to the department. CJON has a comprehensive training program for incoming AEs, which includes individualized mentoring by the outgoing AE of the department and the CJON editor. The AE mentoring/training period is approximately six months; the training/mentoring period continues until the incoming AE feels ready to assume full responsibility for the department. The new AE’s term begins once the AE is the single department AE on the CJON masthead (indicating training is complete).

AEs also contribute to journal policies, procedures, and special projects.

CJON is currently recruiting AEs for two departments: Clinical Moment and Supportive Care.

The Clinical Moment department currently provides a first-person perspective regarding any number of challenging nursing situations, such as patient interactions/discussions, workplace issues, and work–life balance, particularly those facing nurses new to oncology. The editor is searching for a flexible and creative AE to help think about the ongoing direction of this department, which may change throughout the AE’s term.

The Supportive Care department shares treatment and management strategies in supporting patients, caregivers, and families during various stages of the cancer journey (prevention to end of life). The editor is searching for a flexible and creative AE to help think about the ongoing direction of this department, which may change throughout the AE’s term.

Use of the Editorial Manager platform is required for department submissions, so AEs must have access to a computer and internet, as well as be able to regularly access the Editorial Manager site.

To recruit department article authors, preferred AE applicants are comfortable networking in the clinical oncology nursing community and working virtually across asynchronous shared tools and platforms. Finally, preferred AE applicants have experience mentoring clinical oncology nurses in scholarly work, communicate clearly and in a timely manner, and are accustomed to meeting and exceeding deadlines. The CJON Editorial Board meets virtually for approximately one hour each quarter. Attendance at all meetings is required.

Applicants will be contacted to confirm receipt of their application. For selected applicants, the CJON editor will conduct Zoom interviews. All applicants will receive a final response to their CJON AE application. Onboarding for the role will begin in fall 2025, with the new AE assuming the role in full (i.e., beginning the term) by June 2026.
