The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), a professional association that represents 100,000 nurses and is the professional home to more than 35,000 members, seeks a dynamic and visionary oncology nurse to serve as editor of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON). 

 

The mission of CJON, an official publication of ONS, is to publish clinically relevant, evidence-based content for oncology nurses in diverse roles and practice settings to use when caring for those affected by cancer. CJON publishes six times per year and is directed to the practicing nurse specializing in the care of patients with an actual or potential diagnosis of cancer. 

 

The CJON editor works with ONS staff to ensure that the journal’s content supports the CJON mission and is appropriate and appealing to readers by accepting timely and relevant manuscripts, mentoring authors, selecting and working with associate editors and reviewers, and leading editorial board meetings and journal programs and activities.  

 

This position requires: 

  • 10 years of experience in nursing and 5 years of experience in oncology or a comparable combination of experience 

  • An RN and a master’s degree in nursing (doctoral degree and Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation preferred) 

  • A thorough understanding of the topics of interest to oncology nurses who are involved in clinical and evidence-based practice 

  • A wide network of colleagues in oncology, nursing, and publishing 

  • Experience as an editor or assistant editor of a peer-reviewed journal and a working knowledge of nursing publications and publishing 

  • Strong writing, editing, planning, communication, and meeting-facilitation skills 

  • Excellent leadership, consensus-building, and mentoring skills 

  • A demonstrated ability to adhere to strict production schedules and deadlines 

  • A thorough understanding of publishing ethics, including artificial intelligence use 

  • A strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat or similar PDF annotator software, and email, as well as the ability to learn and use the online submission and peer-review system (Editorial Manager) 

  • Ability to travel up to two times a year, as well as participate on monthly touch base calls with ONS staff and quarterly CJON Editorial Board calls 

 

Responsibilities of the role include the following: 

  • Provide review of all submitted content, and determine which submitted manuscripts advance to peer review. 

  • Manage the online peer-review process for all manuscripts, ultimately determining which will be accepted and published. 

  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with the publishing policies. 

  • Provide technical editing of all accepted manuscripts, adhering to established schedules. 

  • Offer responses to author queries requesting consideration of content for CJON. 

  • Lead the CJON Editorial Board and the CJON Review Board, including recruitment and orientation. 

  • Write editorials or coordinate authorship by guest writers for each issue. 

  

All submissions will be reviewed, and candidates selected to advance to the interview phase will be notified during summer 2026. The editor will be selected by fall 2026, with comprehensive onboarding and training to occur prior to the candidate of choice assuming the role in its entirety on January 1, 2027.
