Oncology Acuity

We are looking into the EPIC acuity to base our staffing on. It does not seem to reflect the actual acuity of our oncology patients. Is any inpatient unit using an acuity system that works?

Hi I come from a community hospital in Northern California. We actually just switched over to a new acuity system that our hospital has developed! It utilizes EPIC charting. The design of our Acuity system is a point based scale centered around all patient information that is put into epic. It uploads a score based on real time RN charting and physician orders. The more orders, medications, nursing interventions, and procedures equate to a higher score. Its been great so far in determining acuities. The only downfall is that it is heavily reliant on real-time charting as opposed to batched charting. If an RN is too busy to chart, the scores will not be accurate. I will see if I can ask my manager for any supportive documents to help explain this better for you!

I would love to have the documentation if possible.   The acuity system we are looking at does not have anyway to capture the family issues/emotional support.  Thanks

We have built in epic flowsheets that address a patient's psychosocial/emotional state, any additional interventions necessary, and a group for family presence/whether or not they are participating effectively with patient care. Its pretty helpful to capture especially now when many patients and family are more and more demanding or particular with care. Still waiting on my manager to see if we have anything that i could scan or upload to share...

    Hi Joanna:

Is the Epic based acuity tool for inpatient or outpatient?  I'm looking for support for an outpatient oncology infusion acuity tool.

    Thanks,
    Linda
