Chemotherapy IV Bio-hazardous waste

  • 1.  Chemotherapy IV Bio-hazardous waste

    Hi Everyone,
    I work in a community based outpatient oncology center.  We have been discussing proper disposal of iv chemotherapy tubing, etc and safe practices that protect the nursing staff.  How do others dispose of this waste - in a hard yellow container and close/dispose of when full, or in a yellow bag?

    Thanks a lot!
    Maggie

    I work in the same setting.  We put the vials, needles, syringes, bag and tubing in the yellow bins because it is puncture proof. Gloves, gowns, alcohol pads, absorbent pads, transport bags and everything else go in bags.

    All of our chemo waste goes into 18 gallon yellow bins.

    Shannon;
    That makes so much sense to me to put the gowns and any non-sharps into a bag instead of the expensive chemo bins.  It all ends up in a large red bin with a yellow hazard sticker to be segregated from biohazard and regular trash, so it would still be routed to the appropriate place, and handled the appropriate way.  Do you get the trash bags from a certain vendor?  Are they printed with a HD emblem of some sort?
