New Patient Chemo Education

  • 1.  New Patient Chemo Education

I was wondering what OUTPATIENT infusion centers do for new patient Chemo Education.  And how its documented within the EHR.
Does anyone use Chemocare.com? Do facilities use a system within the EHR?  Micromedex?  Carenotes? Do facilities have their own checklist?  How do nurses follow-up within the EHR?
Any attachments or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a folder filled with educational material for new patients that I order from the American Cancer Society

It includes:- After diagnosis, nutrition, distress in people with cancer,  chemotherapy, nutrition and any surgery done and some others. I document in the EHR   that I provided the patient with these teaching materials.

Are you still able to order the folders from the American Cancer Society?  I was told that they are no longer available.

The American Cancer Society no longer provides the Healthcare personal manager in our area in Michigan. I am told ACS is devoting more Dollars to research now. We no longer have salon services for wigs in our area from ACS. ACS has no volunteer drivers in our area. They are not providing many services for our patients and they admit their focus is shifting to research.

We are experiencing the same changes in support services provided by our local ACS offices. It makes providing education and assistance more challenging as we are searching for other options for our cancer patients. Fortunately, I work in a group of Oncology Nurse Navigators and we are able to collaborate our efforts at finding new resources.

We have 3 ring binders with our clinic info, the binders have info regarding side effects, nutrition, chemotherapy and reputable web sites. We assemble them and personalize per patient diagnosis and treatment plan.

Our outpatient nurses provide the initial chemo teaching...they give out chemo medication education sheets from Lexicomp along with a packet of information that includes:

    ·         booklet about ways to manage chemo related side effects

    ·         reminder sheet for when to call the doctor

    ·         pamphlet about what to expect at the first treatment visit

    ·         wallet card to show at the ER if they present with a fever

    ·         magnet for important phone numbers

We also offer a live chemo class although not everyone attends the class for various reasons. We're about to launch an online version of the class soon. The infusion nurse is expected to reinforce key teaching points at the time of chemo administration.

    Thanks,

    Regina
