Our institution is considering creating a nurse externship program for undergraduate nurses. If you work somewhere that has a current program for undergraduate nurses, would you be willing to discuss more specifics about how your program is designed? We would love to get input as we pursue this initiative! Thank you!

My local hospital's education department hires 4-6 externs each summer.  The applicants are ADN students between their first and second year of nursing school.  They list their top choices for rotation. They will be given two rotations of approximately 4-5 weeks each.  They are paid around $10hr.

I currently have a sweet little 19 year old who has really come out of her shell after working at our busy clinic.  She has gained confidence and tells us it has been a great experience. She cannot hang chemotherapy but we let her program the pump and participate with the two nurses doing the check. She had never started an IV and is now a pro.  She hangs blood and sets up the pump, calls out the info for verification with two RNs present (one looking over her shoulder). If she hears one of us say we activated chemo, she asks what size flush bag. If she sees me gowning to hang chemo, she grabs a flush and shows me the blood return. She sets up sterile field for port accesses (with RN present), RN accesses port and places dressing, then she takes over and finishes drawing the labs.

I also worked at my clinic as an extern, so did our clinical coordinator, and one of the clinic nurses.  It is a good recruitment tool.
