Is anyone using videos to do first chemotherapy education sessions? If you are, what has been the response from patients and families? How often do you offer the video and is there other teaching that goes along with it?

We recently started using a 20 minute video for our chemo teachings, and we have had positive responses from the patients and the RN's.   After completion of the video, we then discuss the specific medications they will receive and any education to coincide with them.

    Hello,
Can you share more about the video? Is it something your facility created or something you purchased from an outside educational source? I am intrested in utilizing something like this in our practice.  Thank you

We have decided to create our own videos also. we have decided to conduct education sessions for the most common teaching topics
    1) Chemotherapy (general)
    2) Neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia
    3) Fatigue and Exercise
    4) Pain
    5) Coping
    6) Nutrition

At first we had thought of conducting regular classroom sessions, but then thought this is not standardized and would be difficult to maintain. Thus we thought of videos. We recorded our first one, which was basically a powerpoint presentation of the contents of the educational session, with a voice over. But then we felt this was a little boring, so this time around we are going to be doing some animations, and we will also try another recording with various multidisciplinary team members each taking a few minutes to talk in the 20-minute video in order to keep it more "active".

I would love to know what others are doing, and what kind of videos they are showing.

    Thanks!

    Rebecca

We made a narrated video of our chemo class. We offer it as a DVD and hope to have it online soon, as an alternative to attending our live class.

The ACS has a resource that may be of interest to some. On their website, they have education video programs from Emmi solutions about chemo and radiation. They are available in English and Spanish. We really like their radiation program. The chemo program is good too although we chose not to use it because there were a few areas that didn't quite match up with what we teach. Click here for the link.

We use Chemocare.com general information about Cancer in general and chemotherapy in general. Then we individualized our teaching to be more specific to patient Treatment plan.
