In the past large Cancer Centers offered intensive courses with class time, testing and hands on time with the nurses administering chemotherapy. Are there any places still offering these courses?

Hi Robin, I am the oncology educator for a community hospital Milford Regional Medical Center in Mass. I have developed a 1 day 9 hour class for introduction to chemotherapy, based upon ONS evidence-based curriculum. I include didactic, a genetic mutation activity( with gummy bears licorice and toothpicks) and demonstration of chemo Administration. I include calculations and the class ends with a written 50 question test. I then administer chemo on the unit with them to walk them through all the steps with PPE and the checklist. It's a slow process ! I love teaching it though.

Christina, I think that is a fabulous way to engage your peers. having the fun didactic portion makes it real and being able to creatively and succinctly move through the process while learning, promotes an elevation of learning that doesn't sacrifice patient safely. It's not a mundane period of time that students begrudgingly count the moments before class is over. They seem excited, as they are learning and correlating facts in practice.
