Intravesical Gemcitabine

    Good Morning!

Now that we can’t get BCG the use of gemcitabine in the bladder is being used. For my facility, it shifts the instillation from urology to oncology and the infusion center because it is now chemotherapy. Are other infusion centers doing this? If so do you have a good process? I am also looking for good patient education.

    Thanks,

American Cancer Society, Intravesical Chemotherapy, is a good source for patient education. We have urologic oncology within our cancer center, separate from the chemo infusion center. All intravesical medications are given within our department by oncology certified and chemotherapy certified urologic nurses. The gemzar, mito, valstar are all mixed/checked/prepared by the infusion center's pharmacy staff. Urologic oncology is such a unique specialty, urology trained nurses are specifically trained on how to prevent or deal with a bladder spasm, difficult cath insertions, ect… So it is definitely worth a trip upstairs to pick up the meds from the pharmacy and instill them in our department. The infusion nurses are also grateful.

We would love to share our experiences in working through this process with anyone who is interested.

    Hi everyone,
What great timing.  I was going to post a request today in reference to intravesical chemotherpay.  Does anyone have policy they can share?  Our urologist is administering intravesical mitomycin in the OR.  Our periop nurses need some support in caring for these patients.  Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you,
    Tina
