For those of you who are oral chemo nurses or supervise them, what is their typical caseload number of patients? Can you also elaborate on the job responsibilities. Do they do prior authorizations, co-pay assistance, drug teaching and any type of follow up?

i do it all: prior authorizations, coordination with pharmacies, education, followup, refill processing, monitoring, and documentation.  My oral oncolytic program has expanded to include a second full time RN.  We are currently working to involve the practice RNs in the followup, process.  We do utilize the resources of a contracted pharmacies that will initiate prior authorizations if they can dispense the drug.  Please feel free to contact me.  I am very open to describing my role in more detail and answer additional questions.

    Hello Susan,

I am currently the only RN working on prior authorizations and financial assistance at my current job. My current patient load is about 50 patients. But, my previous cancer center there were 2 RNs who rotated weekly. Patient load was approximately 200 patients. The RN was responsible for initiating the prior authorizations and renewals, completing paperwork for financial aid, working with specialty pharmacies, and oral adherence calls/ documentation. We were able to utilize a pharmacy to help initiate prior auths to offset some of the work.
