With the upcoming November election amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our caregivers, patients, and family members may wonder about how to vote safely. Many Americans will be voting by mail, and a surge in mailed ballots is anticipated. To make sure your vote counts, follow these simple steps TODAY:
- Check your voter registration: https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx. The Ohio secretary of state website has lots of information on eligibility requirements: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters
- If you are not already registered, register to vote here (the deadline is October 5, but the sooner the better): https://olvr.ohiosos.gov
- Select your preferred voting option:
- At your designated polling location on Election Day (Tuesday, November 3, from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm). You will need to bring an acceptable ID to vote in person. Check your polling location here: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/toolkit/polling-location. Poll workers are needed – you can volunteer here: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/precinct-election-officials/peosignup/
- Early in-person voting, which starts in Ohio on October 6. Check dates, times, and locations with your county board of elections: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/elections-officials/county-boards-of-elections-directory
- Vote by mail (aka absentee voting): https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/absentee-voting. To request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you, you must first print and mail a paper request form to your county board of elections. Absentee ballots will be mailed out to everyone starting on October 6. With a high volume of ballots that will be processed, it is uncertain when these will arrive at your home. Once you have completed your mailed ballot, you can personally drop it off at your county board of elections (the fastest option) or mail it back to them (which could potentially be delayed).
- If you return your ballot to the board in person, or if a *near relative* delivers it for you, the board of elections must receive your ballot no later than 7:30 pm on Election Day, November 3 (near relatives include the voter’s spouse or the voter’s father, mother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, brother, or sister of the whole or half blood, or the son, daughter, adopting parent, adopted child, stepparent, stepchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, or niece).
- If you return your absentee ballot by mail, it must be postmarked no later than the day before Election Day and received by your county board of elections no later than 10 days after the election. By state law, a postmark does not include a date marked by a postage evidence system such as a postage meter.
- You can track the status of your absentee ballot here: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/toolkit/ballot-tracking.
- Spread the word to make sure every voter knows how to vote safely and keep our communities healthy.
